Police have detained seven leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League and sent them to jail following processions and cake-cutting programmes across Gopalganj district to observe the 79th birthday of former prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.
Activists of the banned organisation brought out processions at around 11am on Monday at Chandradighalia in Sadar Upazila along the Dhaka-Khulna Highway, in the Bherar Bazar area on the Gopalganj-Tekerhat regional road, and on Abu Sayeed Road in Gopalganj town.

Flash processions and cake-cutting activities were also reported from various other locations in the district, with video footage of the events subsequently spreading on social media.
Earlier, on Sunday night, police detained seven leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League while they were bringing out a procession for Sheikh Hasina’s birthday in Tungipara upazila. The detainees were produced before a court on Monday and sent to prison.
Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Md. Habibullah said that seven leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League were detained during a procession. He added that police maintain a vigilant stance to prevent any untoward incidents.
