East West University (EWU) observed World Pharmacists Day 2026 with a seminar titled “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures in Bangladesh” at the Manzur Elahi Auditorium on its campus on 28 September.
The event, organised by the Department of Pharmacy, focused on strengthening the role of pharmacists in healthcare and the need for closer industry-academic collaboration to develop skilled professionals for Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical sector, the university said in a press release.
Md Nasser Shahrear Zahedee, Chairman of Radiant Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Member of the Board of Trustees at EWU, delivered the keynote speech. Md Alamgir Hossain, Director General (Additional Secretary) of the Directorate General of Drug Administration, attended as the chief guest, while Professor Shams Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of EWU, was present as the special guest.
The programme was presided over by Professor Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and Founder Vice-Chancellor of EWU. Professor Md Amirul Islam, Chairperson of the Department of Pharmacy, delivered the welcome address.
Speakers at the seminar highlighted the growing importance of pharmacy in modern healthcare systems, stressing the need to equip graduates with practical expertise, innovative thinking and ethical standards to strengthen Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical industry.
They also emphasised that empowering pharmacists is essential for ensuring patient safety, maintaining drug quality and expanding access to healthcare services across the country.
The Department of Pharmacy also arranged two student competitions — a poster presentation and a Pharma Olympiad — followed by an awards ceremony for the winners.
The event was attended by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Treasurer, faculty members, officials, current students and alumni of the Department of Pharmacy.
