Dhaka Customs House has detained a Malaysian national and recovered 4.5kg of gold bars from him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Yang Don Siu, 43, arrived in Dhaka on Malaysia Airlines flight MH196 from Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
Acting on information from an intelligence agency, customs officials kept him under surveillance after he arrived at the airport around 1:45am. He was later stopped while exiting through Green Channel-1 after collecting his baggage.
Dhaka Customs House said it recovered four gold bars weighing 1kg each and five bars weighing 100 grams each, bringing the total weight to 4.5kg.
The bars were wrapped in a black cloth belt, which the passenger had concealed under his shirt. The estimated value of the gold is Tk 8 crore.
Authorities said the passenger had not submitted any baggage declaration. He also failed to produce any documents authorising possession of the gold under the Customs Act 2023 and the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947.
A case is being filed against the passenger with Airport Police Station under the relevant laws.
Operations to prevent illegal gold smuggling at the airport will continue, Dhaka Customs House said.
