The body of Helal Uddin, was recovered on Monday afternoon from the Marikhali River in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj, four days after a trawler carrying 14 passengers capsized in the Meghna River.
With his recovery, the bodies of all four missing members of the same family have been retrieved, raising the death toll from the trawler capsize to five.
Fire Service personnel recovered Helal’s body from beneath Ratantur Bridge, adjacent to the Sonargaon Palli Bidyut office on the Marikhali River. Family members later identified the body.
Abdullah Al Arefin, Deputy Director of Narayanganj Fire Service, confirmed the recovery.
According to local sources, relatives were travelling by trawler from Homna in Cumilla on 24 September to attend the wedding of a couple in Haria area under Baidyerbazar Union in Sonargaon.
The trawler capsized while crossing the Meghna River amid adverse weather conditions, leaving passengers in the water. Locals later rescued several passengers using another trawler.
On the day of the incident, locals rescued Helal’s wife Shirin Begum, 45, and his daughter Lamia Akhtar alive.
Another passenger, Rayesha Begum, 55, died in the capsize, and her body was recovered shortly after the accident. Helal and three other members of his family remained missing.
Between the early hours and morning of 26 September, rescuers recovered the bodies of Helal’s son Sojib, 24, son Samin, 5, and daughter Samina, 17.
Helal’s body was recovered four days later on Monday, completing the recovery of all missing members of the family.
