Former Tangail-5 (Sadar) lawmaker Md Sanowar Hossain, 55, has been shown arrested in an attempted murder case.
The case was filed with Bhatara Police Station over the shooting of protester Soheli Tamanna during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ehsanul Islam passed the order and directed that he be sent to prison following a hearing on Monday on a petition submitted by the investigating officer.
Bhatara Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Aminur Rahman produced Sanowar before the court and submitted the petition to show him arrested in the case.
State lawyer Md Harun-or-Rashid confirmed the matter.
Lawyers representing Sanowar submitted a bail petition in court, which was opposed by the state prosecution.
Following a hearing from both sides, the court ordered him to be shown arrested and sent to prison.
According to the case documents, 200 to 300 leaders and activists of Awami League, led by accused numbers 1 to 8 of Bhatara Police Station, launched an armed attack on protesters on the morning of 5 August 2024 during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
During the attack, Soheli suffered serious injuries to her left wrist due to gunfire and strikes with local weapons, and at one stage was shot in the back.
She was later rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Soheli subsequently filed an attempted murder case as the plaintiff with Bhatara Police Station.
In the petition seeking to show Sanowar arrested, the investigating officer noted that information, evidence, and witness statements gathered during the probe revealed he directly aided the attack.
He allegedly instigated the violence by delivering provocative speeches to armed activists of local Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Swechhasebak League at the time of the incident.
