Three people were killed and seven others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a passenger-carrying CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat on Monday morning.
The incident took place around Ghunti area under Burimari union on the Burimari–Lalmonirhat highway.
Patgram Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Saiful Islam confirmed the incident.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the auto-rickshaw was heading towards Patgram from Burimari land port when a truck coming from the opposite direction lost control due to a mechanical fault. The truck hit the auto-rickshaw head-on before crashing into a roadside shop.
Two people died on the spot. Fire Service personnel and local residents rescued the injured and took them to Patgram Upazila Health Complex, where Mostakin, one of the injured, later died while undergoing treatment.
Hospital sources said five of the seven injured were in critical condition and were transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital after receiving primary treatment. The other two are being treated at Patgram Upazila Health Complex.
The identities of the deceased and injured could not be immediately known, though police and rescuers suspect they are all locals.
OC Saiful said police reached the scene after being informed and initiated legal steps. The incident is under investigation.
