Three Jamaat-e-Islami activists sustained gunshot injuries after a group of armed men attacked them in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali on Sunday afternoon.
The injured were identified as Anwar Hossain, 45, a businessman and Jamaat-e-Islami activist from Joynarayanpur village, and Sourav, 22, and Shihab, 24, who were also identified as Jamaat-e-Islami activists.
The incident occurred around noon in front of the house of a former union parishad chairman in Amanullahpur Union.
Anwar said he and the others were returning from an invitation in Ayubpur when they reached the Patwari house area in Amanullahpur.
He alleged that 15 to 20 armed men, led by a local Awami League figure named Tarek, stopped them and opened fire at him.
Local residents later rescued Anwar and took him to Begumganj Upazila Health Complex. Sourav and Shihab were also shot while attempting to assist him, he said.
All three are currently receiving treatment at the health complex.
Anwar alleged that most of the attackers were from the Amanullahpur area and were involved in Awami League politics. He said, however, that he was unsure why he had been targeted.
The allegations could not be independently verified immediately.
Noakhali Superintendent of Police MM Nasiruddin said several police teams had been sent to the scene after the incident was reported.
“Police are working to identify those involved in the attack,” he said.
Further details were not immediately available as the investigation was underway.
