Md Rabbi Hossain, joint general secretary of Jahangirnagar University (JU) branch of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, has been expelled from the organisation following allegations of wishing ousted Sheikh Hasina on social media on occasion of her birthday.
Several students later detained him and took him to the university proctor’s office, from where he was handed over to the police.
The decision regarding Rabbi Hossain’s expulsion was announced in a press release published by Central Council of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti on Monday.
According to the press release, Rabbi Hossain was expelled from all levels of the organisation, including his primary membership of Jahangirnagar University branch, on charges of engaging in activities contrary to the core principles, policies, ideals, and solidarity of the organisation.
It was learned that Rabbi Hossain commented on a Facebook post made by an activist of the banned Chhatra League on the occasion of Sheikh Hasina’s birthday, in which he wished Sheikh Hasina a happy birthday.
After the matter circulated, allegations of breaching organisational discipline were raised against him. Following this, several students detained him and brought him to the university proctor’s office, from where he was subsequently handed over to the police.
In defense of his comment, Rabbi Hossain said his remark, “Happy birthday, Apa,” was made as sarcasm.
He claimed that he had opposed Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic actions and directly participated in the 2024 mass uprising. He further asserted that he had no involvement whatsoever with Awami League.
Commenting on the incident, the university’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Shamsul Alam said they learned that Rabbi Hossain had wished Sheikh Hasina on her birthday.
Students later brought him to the proctor’s office, and he has now been handed over to the police, who will investigate the matter and take necessary legal action.
