Filmmaker Mushficaa Maasud is making her directorial debut with the fiction project Selfie, marking a new chapter in the creative partnership she shares with her husband, filmmaker Amitabh Reza Chowdhury.
The couple first met in the United States through their shared connection to cinema. Their professional relationship later grew into a personal one, and they eventually married and returned to Bangladesh.
After working alongside Amitabh on several web projects and advertisements, Mushficaa is now directing a fiction on her own for the first time. Khairul Basar and Sarika Sabah will star in Selfie.
Amitabh has welcomed her directorial journey, recalling how Mushficaa once stood beside him on shooting floors and helped him as a second pair of eyes.
“Today, that person is directing her first fiction in Bangladesh with her own perspective, language and dreams,” he wrote on Facebook.
Mushficaa said Amitabh encouraged her to direct the project herself after she became interested in its OTT story. She added that although she is directing independently, he remains closely involved in her creative journey.
Mushficaa studied law at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK before studying post-production at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema in New York and film production at Brooklyn College. She also directed the short film The Anniversary.
The couple are preparing to jointly direct the web series Bohemian Ghoda 2. They also plan to make two films together next year.
Meanwhile, Mushficaa’s own feature project I Am She has been selected for the West Meets East Lab at the Dhaka International Film Festival.
