A man and his wife suffered severe burn injuries after a fire, reportedly caused by a gas leak, broke out at their home in Savar early Friday.
The victims were identified as Kawsar Hossain, 28, and his wife Ruby Akter, 24.
Both are employees of a garment factory.
The incident occurred around dawn on the ground floor of a two-storey building owned by Nur Mohammad near Majidpur Dighirpar Mosque in Savar Model Police Station area.
According to police, the fire broke out when Kawsar tried to light the kitchen stove with a matchstick.
A leak in the gas line caused the flames to spread quickly across the room, leaving the couple badly injured.
Neighbours rescued the couple and took them to a local hospital in Savar.
They were later shifted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Doctors said Kawsar suffered burns to around 90 per cent of his body, while Ruby sustained burns to about 25 per cent.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Nur Mohammad confirmed the incident, saying police had visited the spot and were looking into the circumstances surrounding the fire.
