Former Argentina striker Mario Alberto Kempes has urged supporters to ignore conspiracy theories surrounding the country’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, insisting criticism should remain fair and based on facts.
The 1978 World Cup winner responded after unsubstantiated claims spread across social media following Argentina’s defeat, which ended their bid to retain the title.
In a video posted on his social media accounts, Kempes reminded fans what representing Argentina meant to every player.
“I want to tell you something brief. You know what it meant to me to put on the Argentina jersey. There is nothing greater that can happen to a player than representing their country. I was fortunate enough to experience that.”
Kempes admitted Argentina failed to reach the standards they had set earlier in the tournament but said such performances are part of football.
“I’m not going to lie. It wasn’t the match we all expected. It was clear the team wasn’t at the same level as in the previous three matches. That happens in football. Some days are better than others.”
The former Valencia, River Plate and Rosario Central forward stressed there was a clear difference between a poor performance and the allegations circulating online.
“A team that drops its level in one match is not the same as a team that doesn’t compete. Those versions being shared without any proof don’t help anyone.”
Kempes called on supporters to continue demanding high standards from the national team while refusing to give credibility to rumours lacking evidence.
“If we want to be demanding with the team, let’s do it properly. But let’s not believe everything that circulates without any basis. This jersey deserves respect in good times and bad. Vamos Argentina, always.”
Argentina lost the World Cup final 1-0 after extra time, with Spain ending the Albiceleste’s reign as world champions.
