A local BNP leader, Shahinur Sheikh, 45, was seriously injured after being shot by unidentified assailants in Taltala, Rupsa upazila, Khulna, on Tuesday night.

Sheikh serves as Vice-President of Ward No 2 under TSB Bahirdia Union BNP and is the son of Atiar Sheikh, a resident of Taltala.

Police and local sources said the attack occurred around 11:30 pm while Sheikh was at a local tea stall. Two youths, wearing helmets, arrived on a motorcycle and fired at him. Sheikh sustained two gunshot wounds—one to his leg and another piercing the skin of his head.

Locals rescued him and initially took him to the Upazila Health Complex before transferring him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he remains under treatment.

Officer-in-Charge of Rupsa Police Station Razzaque Mir said police were dispatched immediately after the report and began operations to apprehend the attackers.

Khulna Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tajul Islam confirmed that police worked late into the night and noted that one of the assailants has been identified. He added that the motive will be determined once the suspect is arrested.
