A local BNP leader was killed and four others were injured in an attack by rival groups in the Beraid area of Bongao Union under Savar, Dhaka, on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Abu Sayeed, 52, assistant office secretary of Ward No. 4 BNP under Bongao Union.
The attack stemmed from a prolonged political and personal dispute between Bongao Union BNP’s organising secretary Zohir Uddin Babul and Zakir Hossain, a supporter of the Awami League that was ousted from power during a recent mass movement.
Police and locals said Zakir and his associates had earlier assaulted Babul, leaving him critically injured. After several days of treatment, he returned home from the hospital on Wednesday.
That evening, Savar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jewel Mia spoke with both sides in an effort to calm the situation.
However, around 9pm, while Babul and 10–12 others were returning from Khonda Bazar, they were ambushed in front of Zakir’s club. Abu Sayeed and several others sustained serious injuries in the attack.
The injured were taken to Enam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Abu Sayeed dead. Babul and three others are currently receiving treatment in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
OC Jewel Mia said police have launched operations to arrest those involved in the attack.
