Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left Tehran on Sunday evening for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, with a brief stop in Qatar planned for regional consultations, state media reported.
State news agency IRNA reported that Araghchi would stop in Doha, a key mediator in the US-Iran war, to discuss the latest regional developments, reports AFP.
The visit comes as Iranian officials said they had again conveyed Tehran’s conditions through mediators for ending its blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz has been central to the ongoing Middle East war, which began in late February when Tehran blockaded the waterway in response to US-Israeli attacks.
Tehran now requires all vessels to obtain its authorisation before passing through the strait, citing security and sovereignty concerns. It is also considering a mechanism to impose service fees.
In response, the United States has imposed its own blockade of Iranian ports as the conflict remains deadlocked.
