Jamaat‑e‑Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday said their long march aims to free the country from corruption and resist domination, stressing that the movement is not for partisan demands but to ensure the verdict of the referendum.
The leader of the opposition was speaking at a rally at Bhogra Bypass in Gazipur during the Dhaka–Rangpur long march of the 11‑party alliance.
Shafiqur said, “We have not taken to the streets with partisan demands. We have taken to the streets to ensure the verdict of the referendum.”
The rally was organised to press demands including implementation of the referendum verdict, trial of the July massacre, resolution of electricity, oil, gas and fertilizer crises, curbing the rise in essential commodity prices, ending extortion and land‑grabbing, improving law and order, and implementing the Teesta mega project.
He also called on the people to make the movement a success.
LDP President Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmad said, “We are not against the government, nor against the country. We want to build a nation free of terrorism, extortion and corruption. But the current government is unable to do so under any circumstances. We want reforms, and reforms must be done.”
Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Allama Mamunul Haque said, “We are marching to the northern region to realize our rights. The 11 parties have taken to the streets with public demands. We will return home only with success.
There is no alternative to implementing the referendum verdict. The government must step down by implementing the referendum’s verdict. The government’s procrastination over the Teesta mega project will not be tolerated,” he added.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar said, “By not accepting the referendum verdict, the government has deceived and betrayed the people. We are informing millions about the government’s failures. The government will be compelled to implement the Teesta mega project immediately.”
Khelafat Andolon Naib‑e‑Ameer Maulana Abul Kashem said, “We have taken to the streets with the demands of 180 million people. The government must implement the referendum verdict.”
