Voluntary donors outside close family relations can now donate kidneys without legal restrictions, Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Vice-chancellor FM Siddiqui has said.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday morning, he said, “Bangladesh Medical University has successfully completed the country’s first kidney transplant from an emotional donor. This has opened a new door.”
Legal and medical aspects will be verified before accepting an emotional donor.
“Several agencies are working to screen emotional donors. The agencies will verify the legal grounds before the transplant is carried out,” he said.
He added that a hospital team investigates medical and other complex issues to determine whether an emotional donor is genuine before making a decision.
Siddiqui warned that no financial transactions will be allowed in connection with emotional donors.
“Under no circumstances can money be exchanged,” he said.
He said kidney transplant services had remained suspended for a long time due to complications, but patients will now receive the service regularly.
BMU has successfully performed six kidney transplants to date, he added.
