A total of Tk88,92,968 in cash, along with gold, silver items and foreign currencies from 15 countries, was found in the donation boxes at the Hazrat Shahjalal (R) shrine in Sylhet on Saturday.
The counting began around 9am after the sealed donation boxes and vow cauldrons were opened and continued until around 6pm.
Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Quiyum Choudhury disclosed the amount after the counting was completed.
Besides the cash, the authorities found 1 bhori, 9 ana and 2 rati of gold, along with foreign currencies from 15 countries.
The foreign currencies included £5; 3,994 Indian rupees, 5 Thai baht, 99 Saudi riyals and 25 halalas, 29 Malaysian ringgit, $8.02; 903 Omani baisa, 57 UAE dirhams and 25 fils, 1 Iraqi dinar, 21 Qatari riyals and 50 dirhams, €30.10; 0.025 Bahraini currency, 50 Papua New Guinean kina, 15 Chinese yuan and 5,000 Indonesian rupiah.
The shrine’s donation boxes and large cauldrons were last opened on 15 August, when Tk 70,88,672 was collected. Gold and silver items, along with foreign currencies, were also found at the time.
Earlier, on 11 July, officials found Tk47,10,153 in the boxes and large cauldrons. The previous count, conducted on 22 June, yielded Tk17,65,549.
The district administration later added Tk5 lakh to the amount, taking the total to Tk22,65,549.
The donation boxes and cauldrons at the shrine are opened periodically and the contents are counted in the presence of officials.
