As Bangladesh grapples with intensifying climate risks from cyclones, floods and heatwaves, Bonayan, a corporate-backed tree plantation and sapling distribution programme, is expanding its efforts to restore ecosystems and increase green cover.
Established in 1980, Bonayan has distributed more than 130 million fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal saplings free of charge across Bangladesh over the past 46 years.
It plans to distribute another 5 million saplings nationwide this year, according to a press release.
The programme operates 19 nurseries across the country, producing species suited to local conditions. Its plantation strategy uses a 70:30 mix of fast-growing timber species and native and medicinal trees.
Bonayan has worked with farmers, local communities, government institutions and civil society organisations, while establishing 119 medicinal gardens to improve access to traditional medicinal plants.
Its plantation efforts cover roadsides, community spaces and environmentally sensitive areas, with the programme relying on community participation to expand tree cover and promote environmental stewardship.
Bonayan has received several national and international awards for its contribution to environmental conservation and sustainable development, including the Prime Minister’s National Award for tree plantation on five occasions.
“Bonayan’s 46-year journey represents both a significant achievement and a continuing responsibility,” Ahmed Raihan Ahsanullah, a spokesperson for Bonayan, said.
“As the impacts of climate change continue to intensify, initiatives that encourage tree plantation have become more important than ever.”
Ahsanullah said the programme’s plan to distribute 5 million saplings this year would support efforts to increase Bangladesh’s tree-to-land ratio and strengthen environmental resilience.
“We remain committed to working with communities and stakeholders to strengthen ecosystem restoration and create a sustainable future for generations to come,” he said.
