Brad Pitt is set to reprise his role in Paramount’s long-awaited sequel to ‘World War Z’, with the project now moving forward after years of development, states Variety.
Edward Berger, who directed ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and ‘Conclave’, has signed on to direct the sequel from a screenplay by Dennis Kelly. Berger recently worked with Pitt on A24’s ‘The Riders’. Plot details remain under wraps.
Pitt will produce the film through his production company Plan B alongside Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. Berger will serve as an executive producer.
The original ‘World War Z’, directed by Marc Forster and based on Max Brooks’ 2006 novel ‘World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War’, earned more than $540 million worldwide.
Pitt starred as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations employee who races against time to stop a global zombie pandemic.
Paramount announced in April that the sequel had entered active development at CinemaCon. Several attempts to make a follow-up had previously stalled, including a version that would have been directed by Pitt’s frequent collaborator David Fincher, which was scrapped in 2019.
The sequel news comes as Pitt promotes his upcoming Paramount film ‘Heart of the Beast’, directed by David Ayer.
Pitt will next reprise his Oscar-winning role as Cliff Booth in ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’, directed by Fincher from a screenplay by Quentin Tarantino. The film will debut in IMAX theatres on 25 November before streaming on Netflix from 23 December.
Pitt’s other upcoming project, ‘The Riders’, which he made with Berger, is currently in post-production.
