A series of cocktail explosions occurred across Dhaka on Saturday night, leaving at least two people injured, while a seized vehicle was set on fire outside South Keraniganj Police Station.
Two separate cocktail explosions occurred at Jatrabari Chourashta earlier in the evening, resulting in injuries to two individuals.
At around 7:30pm, an auto-rickshaw driver named Billal Hossain, 32, was injured in a cocktail explosion in front of Samad Super Market at Jatrabari Chourashta.
Billal, originally from Char Fasson Upazila in Bhola and currently residing in Demra, was waiting for passengers in his auto-rickshaw when two to three loud explosions occurred nearby, filling the area with smoke.
After noticing blood bleeding from his right hand, locals removed him from the scene, and relatives later took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at around 10:30 pm following details provided by his cousin, Bachchu Chakladar.
DMCH Police Camp In-charge Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, citing attending doctors, said Billal returned home after receiving first aid.
Later, at around 9pm, Zakariya Hossain, 24, a graphics designer, suffered severe injuries under his chin in another cocktail explosion at Jatrabari Chourashta.
His wife, Sumaiya Khatun, said they reside in the Narayanganj Signboard Passport Office area, where Zakariya operates a shop next to the passport office.
The couple was returning home to Signboard from a relative’s house in Sadarghat when an explosion occurred beside Zakariya as he was boarding a rickshaw at Jatrabari Chourashta.
Explosion near secretariat metro rail station
At around 10:45pm, a cocktail exploded on the road adjacent to the Secretariat Metro Rail Station in Paltan. Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the incident, stating that officers were heading to the location to identify those responsible.
No immediate details regarding casualties or damage were reported.
Seized pickup set ablaze
Following earlier bus arson incidents in Mirpur and Middle Badda, a seized pickup truck parked on the main road outside South Keraniganj Police Station was set on fire at around 9:30 pm on Saturday.
South Keraniganj Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Asgar Ali confirmed the occurrence, stating that unidentified individuals set fire to the vehicle and police are investigating the incident, with further details to be provided later. Earlier in the evening, fire incidents were also reported involving two buses in Mirpur and one bus in Middle Badda.
