SRB-2 has arrested Faruk, alias Kailla Faruk, a notorious extortionist and terrorist known in Mohammadpur and Keraniganj areas, along with a foreign pistol, a magazine, and a machete.
His associate, Md Ismail Hossain Dalim, was also arrested during the drive.
Additional DIG Naimul Hasan, commanding officer of SRB-2, disclosed these details at a press conference held at SRB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar on Monday.
He said that based on internal intelligence, the team learned that Faruk was staying in Kalatia area of Keraniganj.
A special operation was subsequently conducted in the area, leading to the arrest of Faruk and Ismail, from whom a 9mm foreign pistol, a magazine, and a machete were seized.
According to the official, allegations against Faruk include demanding extortion money from gas cylinder traders in Bosila area, holding officials of Steadfast Courier Service hostage to demand extortion in Chandipur area, demanding extortion from various commercial establishments in 40 Feet area of Mohammadpur, sheltering and patronising teenagers and youths involved in mugging in Bosila Bridge area, forcibly occupying land for sand filling, and providing protection as a godfather to drug traffickers.
Naimul further said Faruk faces a total of four cases, including one under the Narcotics Control Act at Mohammadpur Police Station, and three other cases on charges of rioting, causing grievous hurt, extortion, attempt to murder, and criminal intimidation.
In addition, a CR case is pending against him at Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station. Two more cases under the Arms Act and regarding the extortion incident at Steadfast Courier Service are currently under process.
In response to questions from journalists, the SRB commander clarified that Faruk was identified as a godfather of drug traffickers, not of teenage gangs.
When asked about the law and order situation in Mohammadpur, he claimed that conditions have improved compared to earlier, adding that ongoing efforts are being made to bring those involved in extortion, terrorism, and instilling fear among the public to justice.
Replying to a query on whether Faruk was involved in injuring the officer-in-charge of the relevant police station during the Steadfast Courier Service occurrence, the SRB commander said Faruk was present at the scene.
Further legal proceedings against the two arrested individuals are currently under process, said the SRB-2 commanding officer.
