The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Sunday, fixed 6 October for hearing on framing charges against 10 individuals, including former Inspectors General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque and Mohammad Javed Patwary, over crimes against humanity regarding the 2016 killing of seven youths in Gazipur after framing them as militants.
The tribunal set the hearing date following a time petition submitted by the defence. Prosecutor Faruk Ahammad represented the prosecution during the proceedings.
According to the prosecution, seven individuals detained from various parts of the country were taken to a house in Gazipur on 8 October 2016 and shot dead, with claims made at the time that they were militants.
However, an investigation by the probe body of the International Crimes Tribunal revealed that the seven persons had been arrested from different places across Bangladesh at different times and kept forcibly disappeared for a long period before being shot dead in that manner.
Among the seven victims was Ibrahim, who was a student at a madrasa in Jatrabari.
Following the July Uprising, his father lodged a complaint with the tribunal’s investigation agency alleging the extrajudicial disappearance and murder of his son. Upon completing its inquiry, the investigation agency submitted its report to the prosecution.
Following scrutiny of the report, the prosecution submitted formal charges on 3 February against 10 individuals, including fallen prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former IGPs AKM Shahidul Haque and Mohammad Javed Patwary.
The prosecution contends that crimes against humanity were committed in the killing of seven youths in Gazipur after branding them as militants.
Former police officers Md Asaduzzaman Mia, Md Monirul Islam, and Harun Or Rashid have also been accused in the case. Currently, Shahidul Haque and Asaduzzaman Mia are under arrest and in prison in connection with this case.
