A hearing on the framing of charges against 10 individuals, including former Inspector Generals of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque and Mohammad Javed Patwary, over alleged crimes against humanity for killing seven youths in Gazipur in 2016 after branding them as militants, will take place on Sunday.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 fixed the date for the charge-framing hearing on Thursday following a petition by the prosecution, with Prosecutor Mamunur Rashid conducting the hearing.
According to the prosecution, seven individuals detained from various parts of the country were brought to a house in Gazipur on 8 October 2016 and shot dead under the claim that they were militants.
However, an inquiry by the investigation agency of International Crimes Tribunal revealed that the seven persons were arrested from different places across Bangladesh at different times and kept enforcedly disappeared for a prolonged period before being shot dead.
Among the seven victims was Ibrahim, who studied at a madrasa in Jatrabari. Following the July mass uprising, his father lodged a complaint alleging extrajudicial enforced disappearance and murder with the tribunal’s investigation agency.
Upon concluding the investigation, the investigation agency of International Crimes Tribunal submitted its report to the prosecution.
After scrutinising the report, the prosecution formally filed charges on 3 February against 10 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former IGPs AKM Shahidul Haque and Mohammad Javed Patwary.
The prosecution claims that crimes against humanity were committed in the killing of the seven youths in Gazipur under the guise of tagging them as militants.
Other accused in the case include former police officers Md Asaduzzaman Mia, Md Monirul Islam, and Harun-or-Rashid. Currently, Shahidul Hoque and Asaduzzaman Mia are arrested and held in prison in connection with this case.
