Bangladesh Coast Guard has detained seven alleged smugglers in Chattogram’s Patenga area with illegally smuggled goods worth an estimated Tk33 lakh from Myanmar.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon disclosed the information on Sunday afternoon.
He said the Coast Guard Outpost Patenga conducted a raid at the sea beach area near Patenga Police Station at around 7am.
During the operation, Coast Guard personnel searched a cargo boat and seized around 2,000kg of iron scrap and 20,000kg of old battery scrap. Seven people were detained at the same time.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that the scrap materials were illegally brought into Bangladesh from Myanmar through fishing boats and were being transported into the Karnaphuli channel using cargo boats.
The Coast Guard said legal action was being taken against the seized goods, the boat allegedly used for smuggling and the detained individuals.
The force added that its operations to prevent smuggling would continue.
