The Vatican has expressed its support for a democratic electoral process in Bangladesh, hoping that the upcoming national elections will be conducted in a manner that is free, fair, just, and transparent.
Archbishop Kevin S. Randell, Vatican Ambassador to Bangladesh, made the statement on Thursday evening during a ceremony marking Pope Day at the Vatican Embassy in Dhaka. The event coincided with the official visit of Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue.
“As Bangladesh approaches its national elections, the Holy See wishes for a process that reflects integrity, transparency, and fairness,” said Archbishop Randell. He emphasized that the Vatican does not support any particular political party, form of government, or candidate.
“The half a million Christians in Bangladesh—both Catholic and Protestant—will vote according to their conscience, just like every other citizen,” he said.
During his visit, Cardinal Koovakad engaged in interfaith dialogue, meeting Islamic scholars and visiting places of worship, including the National Mosque, a Hindu temple, and a Buddhist pagoda in Dhaka. His visit focused on fostering religious harmony and understanding between communities.
Archbishop Randell also highlighted the importance of interreligious dialogue in promoting peace, particularly in a world confronting growing intolerance, violence, and extremism.
“We must be brave enough to build bridges instead of walls, acting with compassion like the Good Samaritan. Religion should never be used to justify hatred or violence,” he said.
Reflecting on Pope Francis’ 2017 visit to Bangladesh and Myanmar following the mass displacement of the Rohingya people, Archbishop Randell reiterated the Pope’s message of peace and dignity for refugees.
“These displaced people deserve dignity, safety, and a permanent home,” he said. “Pope Francis has consistently advocated for global support for the Rohingya community,” he added, correcting a previous attribution of the message to Pope Leo XIV.
Professor CR Abrar, the chief guest at the event, reinforced the Vatican’s values, stressing that Bangladesh’s relationship with the Holy See is based on mutual principles of compassion, justice, and respect. “As we move forward, let us commit to building inclusive societies that transcend religious, cultural, and social boundaries,” he concluded.
