The government has placed the power sector at the top of its priority list as it prepares to meet rising electricity demand during the summer amid global energy uncertainties.
According to an official document, Bangladesh’s total installed power generation capacity stands at 32,332MW, including 28,919MW from grid-based sources. Current daily demand ranges between 14,500MW and 15,000MW.
However, authorities expect the national grid to face mounting pressure in the coming months as temperatures rise and electricity consumption increases.
Despite having sufficient installed capacity, the grid may struggle during peak summer periods. Demand surges, combined with maintenance needs, storm-related damage and limitations in transmission and distribution infrastructure, often lead to localised outages.
Fuel supply remains a major concern. Volatility in the global energy market, driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, has complicated the procurement and pricing of primary energy. This situation affects the country’s ability to maintain uninterrupted supply during peak demand hours.
In response, the Power Division has initiated a 180-day action plan aligned with the government’s election manifesto. The plan focuses on diversifying energy sources, with increased emphasis on renewable power, and aligning infrastructure development with new generation projects.
The government has also taken measures to manage demand. These include staggered holidays for industries and awareness campaigns through leaflets and videos to encourage energy conservation among consumers.
Officials said steps have been taken to increase power generation in line with rising demand. The government has prioritised the sector, ensured efforts to secure primary fuel supply and adopted strategies to strengthen both supply and demand-side management.
The plan also includes short, medium and long-term measures for power generation, alongside the development of transmission and distribution infrastructure in coordination with generation projects.
Authorities have stressed the importance of renewable energy and are working to ensure adequate financing under the annual development programme. They are also closely monitoring project implementation to resolve issues quickly and ensure timely completion.
Through these combined efforts, the Power Division aims to maintain stable electricity supply and manage the challenges posed by rising summer demand and global energy pressures.
