Bangladesh Bank has instructed commercial banks to cut energy consumption, urging bank officials to use public transport instead of private vehicles as part of broader fuel-saving measures aimed at protecting national energy security.
In a directive issued Wednesday, the central bank asked all scheduled banks to reduce both electricity and fuel use amid ongoing disruptions in global supply chains.
Under the instruction, bank employees have been encouraged to travel by public transport or adopt car-pooling arrangements instead of using private cars. Bank managements have also been told to strictly limit unnecessary official travel in order to reduce petroleum consumption.
The central bank also asked banks to set air-conditioner temperatures at 25 degrees Celsius or higher to lower electricity demand. Officials have been directed to maximise the use of natural daylight and switch off electronic devices that are not in use.
Banks have further been instructed to minimise decorative lighting and restrict the use of electronic display boards in order to reduce energy consumption.
The directive also includes measures to cut fuel use for institutional operations, including ensuring fuel-efficient management of backup power generators.
