Bangladesh is considering importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States under a long-term arrangement, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Wednesday.
The minister disclosed the development after a bilateral meeting with the US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent Christensen held at the Ministry of Finance in the evening.
According to the finance minister, the discussion focused on the possibility of securing LNG supplies from the United States through a long-term agreement to help strengthen the country’s energy security.
He also said Bangladesh raised the issue of being allowed to purchase oil from Russia under similar arrangements granted to India.
The meeting further included discussions on expanding bilateral trade and investment between the two countries.
In a separate development, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood requested additional diesel supply from India during a meeting with the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma.
