A construction worker was allegedly beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Sonachora area of Bandar upazila, Narayanganj early Monday.
The assault reportedly took place inside the house of one Mesbah Uddin, where Parvez had been detained overnight.
The deceased Parvez, son of late Tara Mia from Barmashil area of Siddhirganj, had been residing as a tenant in Dhakeshwari area of Bandar at the home of Bulbul Misha.
His wife, Khadija Begum, firmly denied the allegation of theft, stating that her husband was not thief but a construction worker.
“They dragged him inside the house at night and beat him mercilessly, accusing him of stealing electric wires,” she said. Khadija demanded an impartial investigation and justice for her husband’s death.
Quoting local residents, Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Liakat Ali reported that on Saturday night, Mesbah Uddin and his two sons apprehended Parvez on suspicion of theft and assaulted him.
Parvez succumbed to his injuries the following morning, after which the suspects fled the area. Police later recovered the body from Mesbah’s house.
The body has been sent to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Police have launched an operation to arrest those involved, confirming that legal proceedings are underway, the official said.
