While Cox’s Bazar and Patenga have traditionally been the primary choices for Eid holiday travel, Parki Beach in Anwara upazila has emerged as a significant new tourist spot.
Once known primarily to locals, the coastal site has been developed through the efforts of the Barasat Union Parishad since 2013. The inauguration of the Bangabandhu Tunnel has fundamentally transformed the accessibility of the beach, making it more attractive to visitors.
Location and Connectivity Situated approximately 20 kilometres south of Chattogram city, the beach spans roughly 13 kilometres in length. It is located on the east-southeast bank of the Karnaphuli River mouth, mirroring Patenga which sits on the western bank.
Previously, the journey from the city via Anwara took between two to three hours; however, the Bangabandhu Tunnel under the river has reduced travel time to just 30 minutes. This logistical shift has led to a multi-fold increase in the number of visitors.
Scenic Route and Attractions The journey to the beach offers a scenic experience, passing through rows of small hills and industrial landmarks such as Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) and KAFCO.
Near the entrance, the landscape is defined by narrow roads, green fields, and large fish enclosures. Upon arrival, tourists are greeted by a vast tamarisk (Jhau) forest, providing shade and a natural atmosphere where red crabs can be seen across the sands.
Facilities and Ongoing Development Locally referred to as “Parkir Char,” the beach offers recreational activities including speedboats, sea-bikes, and horse riding.
For those seeking tranquility, the northern end of the beach provides views of the confluence where the Bay of Bengal meets the Karnaphuli River. Significant infrastructure projects are currently underway to improve roads, construct shops, and enhance security.
While the current lack of high-quality hotels or motels often requires tourists to leave before evening, a modern tourism complex is being developed to address this limitation.
Safety Guidelines for Visitors Holidaymakers are urged to exercise caution by checking tide schedules before swimming and following the advice of locals. Due to insufficient lighting at the site, visitors are advised to avoid secluded areas after sunset.
