A businessman was found murdered with his throat slit in Nakhongchhari Upazila of Bandarban on Friday morning.

Police recovered the body of Jafar Alam Babul, 55, from the premises of an abandoned Buddhist monastery at Chadupahara under Baishari Union around 11am.

The monastery is locally known as Dhungchai Marma’s Kayang.

Nakhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mozammel Haque confirmed the incident, saying the killing appeared to have taken place sometime on Thursday night.

The motive behind the murder and the identities of those involved could not be immediately established.

The incident has created tension in the Baishari area, although no untoward incident was reported.

A local source said a nearby rubber plantation had been mortgaged to Babul’s son-in-law and suspected that a dispute over control of the plantation or financial transactions might be linked to the killing.

Another source claimed gambling sessions were regularly held at the abandoned monastery at night and suspected that an argument over gambling could have led to the murder.

OC Mozammel Haque said police had launched a serious investigation into the incident but declined to comment further before completing the initial probe.
