A delegation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), led by Resident Representative Stefan Liller, met with the Chairperson and Commissioners of the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh at the Commission’s office on Tuesday.
The delegation held talks with Commission Chairperson Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and other commissioners, focusing on strengthening cooperation in advancing human rights protection and the rule of law in Bangladesh.
During the meeting, both sides underscored the importance of joint advocacy efforts to transform the National Human Rights Commission Ordinance into a comprehensive law.
They also engaged in discussions on the country’s overall human rights situation, allegations of violations against law enforcement agencies, and mechanisms to ensure accountability.
Commission representatives highlighted the body’s broad mandate under the existing ordinance, while pointing to structural limitations and operational challenges that hinder the full exercise of its authority, particularly in conducting investigations and inquiries.
Emphasis was placed on the need to enhance institutional capacity to enable the Commission to perform its duties more effectively.
The UNDP delegation and Commission members agreed to continue dialogue on human rights issues, strengthen information-sharing, and expand future collaboration to reinforce fundamental rights protections in Bangladesh.
