The United Nations has congratulated Bangladesh on its election as president of the 43rd session of the Unesco General Conference.
The achievement marks a historic milestone in Bangladesh’s 53-year membership with the organisation and reflects the country’s growing global leadership in education, culture, sciences, communication, and information.
Khondker M Talha, Ambassador of Bangladesh to France and Permanent Delegate to Unesco, has been elected president of the 43rd General Conference, positioning Bangladesh at the forefront of Unesco’s decision-making platform for the first time.
The election was held on Tuesday during the 222nd session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris.
Initially, Bangladesh, Japan, India, and South Korea were in the running for the presidency.
However, India and South Korea withdrew their nominations in September, leaving Bangladesh and Japan in the final contest, according to a press release from the Bangladesh Embassy in France.
