Athletic Club handed Atletico Madrid their first defeat of the La Liga season with a dominant 3-0 win at San Mames on Saturday.

Nico Williams, Robert Navarro and Oihan Sancet scored the goals as Athletic took control after a goalless first half.

Atletico started the match brightly. Lee Kang-in showed good control before sending an early effort just wide from inside the box.

Athletic slowly found their rhythm and started creating chances of their own. Sancet picked up a loose ball near the Atletico goal but could only find the side netting.

Alex Baena later tested Unai Simon from distance at the other end. Lee also tried his luck from outside the box, but neither side could find a goal before the break.

The game changed quickly in the second half.

Athletic took the lead when Inaki Williams sent a curling ball towards goal. His brother Nico got there and headed home from close range.

The Williams brothers were involved again as Athletic doubled their lead soon after.

Nico found Inaki, who played the ball into the penalty area. Navarro finished the move with a fine curling shot into the far corner. It was his second goal of the season.

Atletico struggled to recover after conceding twice.

Julian Alvarez had a good chance to bring his side back into the match in the 70th minute. He found space inside the box and sent a low shot towards goal.

Simon reacted quickly and made an excellent save to keep Athletic’s two goal advantage.

Athletic then added a third goal in the final minute of normal time.

Benat Gerenabarrena sent the ball across the box from the right. It went past two Atletico defenders before Sancet arrived to score from close range.

The 3-0 defeat ended Atletico’s unbeaten start to the La Liga season, while Athletic climbed to eighth place with an impressive home victory.
