Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that the police force is being provided with necessary training to conduct the upcoming local government elections in a manner similar to the previous national parliamentary election.
He said the local government elections will be non-partisan and those who are eligible under the law will be able to participate.
Speaking after formally inaugurating the police training programme at Rajarbagh on Wednesday afternoon, he said Ansar and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel would also be trained in phases.
Describing a fair election as a constitutional responsibility, he said, “They will be provided with body-worn cameras while carrying out election duties. The police have many limitations. Many of their vehicles were burnt and police stations were looted after 5 August. Despite this, the police have assured us of their full co-operation.”
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir said Bangladesh Police is ready to provide all kinds of support as per the instructions of the Election Commission. Regarding the capability of police to ensure a fair and neutral election, he said the public would assess and judge their performance.
It is expected that 50,000 police personnel from across the country will take part in the training programme.
The local government elections are scheduled to be held after the fall of the Awami League government. Like the national election, the Election Commission has full capacity this time as well.
The CEC expressed hope that police personnel would be able to maintain discipline in the upcoming election, as they proved their capability during the 2026 national election.
