Sergio Gor, US ambassador to India and special envoy to South and Central Asia, began his first official visit to Bangladesh on Thursday.
Welcoming him, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen said the trip would help strengthen Bangladesh‑US strategic ties, as well as regional security and economic cooperation.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman described the visit as “exploratory,” noting that Gor would meet government officials and other stakeholders to gain a broader understanding of Bangladesh.
He added that the envoy is expected to visit Rohingya camps, highlighting that the United States remains the largest international contributor to the Rohingya humanitarian response.
Khalilur said that Bangladesh‑US relations are multidimensional and both sides want to deepen the partnership. Asked about possible US pressure over the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART), he said Bangladesh does not feel any pressure.
“We will never strengthen relations with one country at the expense of another. We seek to build ties with all countries while protecting and advancing Bangladesh’s national interests,” he said.
