Sergio Gor, US ambassador to India and special envoy to South and Central Asia, will arrive in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon for a three‑day visit.
On the first day, he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman.
According to diplomatic sources, he is expected to visit Cox’s Bazar on Friday to see the situation of Rohingya refugees firsthand.
Analysts in diplomacy and international relations consider the trip significant in the context of PM Tarique’s recent Beijing visit, Bangladesh’s growing engagement with various countries, and heightened regional diplomatic activity.
Since the BNP government took office in February, Gor is the third senior US official to visit Dhaka. Earlier, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs S Paul Kapur came in March, followed by Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch in May.
Washington’s assessment of Bangladesh’s strategic role may be reflected in this visit, following the prime minister’s trip to China in June, the foreign minister’s visit to Moscow the same month, and the Turkish foreign minister’s visit to Dhaka.
Trump appointed Sergio Gor in August 2025 as the US State Department’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia. Since then, he has emerged as a key figure in Washington’s regional diplomacy.
In January, Gor began serving as US ambassador in New Delhi. With New Delhi as his base, he has been tasked with advancing US strategic ties with India as well as Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. His visits to Nepal and Sri Lanka as Special Envoy reflect this regional strategy.
