Hollywood’s shifting economics were thrown into sharp relief this year as Tom Cruise emerged as the world’s highest paid actor of 2025, reportedly earning as much as $150 million for a single film.
At 63, Cruise returned to the top of the global earnings list for the first time in more than a decade, driven by his lucrative deal for ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’, the latest and final instalment in the long-running action franchise. Industry estimates place his earnings from the film between $130 million and $150 million, reflecting a profit-sharing arrangement that has become increasingly common for stars who anchor major studio tentpoles.
Cruise last held the top spot in 2012, when he earned $75 million in a year, according to Forbes. His return to the summit dislodges Dwayne Johnson, who has dominated the rankings in five of the past nine years. The scale of Cruise’s earnings also underlines the widening gap at the top of the industry, with no other actor in 2025 reportedly earning even half his total.
Daniel Craig followed at a distant second, taking home around $50 million for the next ‘Knives Out’ film. Cameron Diaz ranked third and emerged as the year’s highest paid actress, earning an estimated $45 million for her Netflix action comedy ‘Back in Action’.
Elsewhere on the list, Brad Pitt earned roughly $30 million for the Formula One drama ‘F1’, while Leonardo DiCaprio secured about $25 million for ‘One Battle After Another’. Adam Sandler continued his profitable streaming partnership with a reported $20 million payday for ‘Happy Gilmore 2’.
Outside Hollywood, Indian cinema also featured prominently. Veteran Tamil star Rajinikanth was the highest paid actor in India this year, reportedly earning more than $20 million for the film Coolie.
The figures highlight how franchise power, global box office appeal and backend deals now define earning potential in the film industry, with Cruise’s latest feat reinforcing his status as one of cinema’s most bankable stars well into his sixties.
