Bangladesh Biman Airlines is planning to launch direct flights between Sylhet and Chattogram, and Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar. The decision is being taken following a request from Commerce Adviser and Sylhet-1 lawmaker Khandaker Abdul Muktadir.
Sylhet City Corporation Administrator and district BNP President Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury said the relevant authorities would hold an emergency meeting after the Eid-ul-Adha holidays to finalise the matter.
He said the decision came in response to a long-standing demand from Sylhet residents and thanked the commerce adviser for the initiative.
“It will make communication between Sylhet, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar easier and create new momentum in the tourism and business sectors,” he said.
Commerce Adviser Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said he had requested Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director to launch the flights.
He said the airline authorities assured him that they would consider the matter on a priority basis and take necessary steps. He expressed hope that positive news would come soon.
Earlier in 2020, the then Awami League government launched flights on the Sylhet–Cox’s Bazar route through the efforts of AK Momen and Md Mahbub Ali. Flights operated twice a week on the route for a short period before being suspended. However, no direct flight has ever operated on the Sylhet–Chattogram route.
