Six more people died of dengue and 1,948 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in the 24 hours to Wednesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the latest fatalities, the country’s dengue death toll has risen to 245 this year.

The DGHS Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room reported the figures in its daily dengue update issued on Wednesday.

Of the six people who died during the latest 24-hour period, three were men and three were women. One was aged 6-10, two were aged 36-40, and three were aged 41-45.

Among the new patients, 343 were admitted in Chattogram Division, 320 in Dhaka Division outside the city corporations, and 248 in Khulna Division.

Dhaka South City Corporation recorded 210 new admissions, while 189 patients were admitted in Dhaka North City Corporation.

The remaining admissions were reported in Barishal (212), Rajshahi (211), Mymensingh (102), Rangpur (99) and Sylhet (14) divisions.

Since the beginning of the year, 79,620 dengue patients have been hospitalised nationwide, the DGHS said.

Of the latest patients, 1,199 were men and 749 were women. The 21-25 age group recorded the highest number of admissions, with 284 patients, followed by 278 aged 16-20 and 269 aged 26-30.

Men account for 62.3 per cent of all dengue patients hospitalised this year, while women make up 37.7 per cent, according to DGHS data.

However, women account for a larger share of fatalities, with women accounting for 52.3 per cent of the 245 deaths and men 47.7 per cent.

September sees sharp rise in cases

City corporation areas have reported 61,080 dengue hospitalisations so far this year, while 18,174 patients have been admitted from areas outside city corporations.

September recorded the highest monthly number of hospital admissions so far this year, with 43,774 patients. The figure was 9,206 in August and 2,907 in July.

Dengue deaths also rose sharply in September, with 148 fatalities recorded during the month, compared with 43 in August and 36 in July.

Of the 1,948 patients admitted in the latest 24-hour period, 1,678 were admitted to government hospitals and 270 to private hospitals, according to the DGHS.

The figures show a sharp rise in dengue cases and deaths in September compared with the previous months.
