In Dhaka’s film industry, the name Sohanur Rahman Sohan is synonymous with discovering stars. From Moushumi, Salman Shah and Popy to today’s superstar Shakib Khan, all began their silver screen journeys under his direction. The acclaimed filmmaker passed away on September 13, 2023.
Sohan entered the world of films in 1977 as an assistant to director Shibli Sadiq. He later worked under Shahidul Haque Khan (‘Kalmilata’, 1981), AJ Mintu (‘Ashanti’, 1986) and again with Shibli Sadiq in ‘Bheja Chokh’ (1988).
His directorial debut came the same year with ‘Biswas Abiswas’, but it was ‘Keyamat Theke Keyamat’ that established his name. The film introduced Salman Shah and Moushumi, ushering in a new era for Bangladeshi cinema.
More than just a box-office hit, the film captured the love, emotions and cultural spirit of an entire generation. Known for his mastery in romantic and family-oriented storytelling, Sohan depicted social realities, the intricacies of relationships and human emotions in simple yet powerful ways.
His dialogues struck deep chords with audiences, while the songs from his films became timeless hits. Among his popular works are ‘Ananta Bhalobasha’, Tomar JonnoPagol’ and ‘Amar Ghor Amar Behesht’.
Beyond his filmmaking, Sohan was committed to nurturing young talent, opening the door for many new faces in the industry. He also served multiple terms as president and general secretary of the Bangladesh Film Directors’ Association and was a member of the Censor Board.
