The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched an investigation into seven major technology companies over how their artificial intelligence (AI) Chatbots interact with children, the BBC reports.
The regulator is seeking details on how the companies make money from these products and what safety measures they have in place.
Concerns are growing worldwide that children may be especially vulnerable to AI systems that mimic human conversation and emotions, often presenting themselves as friends or companions.
The companies under probe include Alphabet, OpenAI, Character.ai, Snap, XAI, Meta, and Instagram. All have been approached for comment.
Character.ai told Reuters it welcomed the opportunity to share its insights with regulators. Snap said it supported “thoughtful development” of AI that balances innovation with safety.
“Children can mistake AI systems for real friends, and that is where the risks become serious”, said one child safety advocate.
The issue of AI and its impact on young people is drawing increasing scrutiny as regulators weigh the risks against rapid technological growth.
