Vehicular movement on the Sherpur Bridge on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway will remain suspended for 10 consecutive hours from 11pm Friday to 8am Saturday due to repair work.
The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) has advised commuters on the route to use alternative roads during this period.
Executive Engineer of RHD Sylhet Khairul Basar Mohammad Saddam Hossain confirmed the matter. He said the damaged deck slab of the bridge will be repaired during the closure.
The Sherpur Bridge, located in Moulvibazar and built in 1990, is undergoing repairs under the Dhaka–Sylhet corridor road development project.
The main repair work will take place between 11:00pm Friday and 8:00am Saturday, during which all traffic on the bridge will remain completely suspended.
To ease travel and avoid congestion before, during and after the work, the RHD has suggested alternative routes. Commuters on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway can travel via Shayestaganj in Habiganj through Mirpur–Sreemangal–Moulvibazar–Rajnagar–Fenchuganj to reach Sylhet.
For the Dhaka–Sylhet–Sunamganj route, travellers can use the alternative path via Saidpur Bazar–Raniganj–Jagannathpur to reach Sunamganj.
The RHD official said “Necessary publicity has been carried out and transport owners’ associations have prepared to use alternative routes.”
He added “Traffic will remain completely suspended on the bridge for 10 hours for the repair work. Afterwards, movement will resume on a limited basis, with vehicles allowed to pass in a single lane.”
