Police have detained three people for questioning in connection with the murder of a 13-year-old boy in Cumilla.
The victim, Yashat Shahriar Apratim, was the only son of KM Firoz Shahriar and Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Bangla Department at Cumilla University.
The detainees have been identified as Tuhin, Anas and Fahim, according to police.
Mohammad Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Cumilla Sadar South Police Station, said the three were taken into custody for questioning as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.
“Our operation is ongoing,” the OC said.
Police said Tuhin was detained at around 3:30pm on Saturday after CCTV footage showed him accompanying the victim, Yashat Shahriar Apratim, on the Cumilla University campus.
The footage indicated that the two remained in the area for about an hour.
Anas was detained at around 7pm, followed by Fahim at approximately 7:30pm, police said.
Apratim had been missing since Friday afternoon. His body was recovered from a jungle in the Kotbari area of Cumilla district on Saturday.
According to police, Apratim left his home in the Kotbari area, within the jurisdiction of Sadar Dakshin Police Station, at around 3:30pm on Friday. He was carrying his mother’s iPhone and had reportedly gone out to take photographs with friends.
When he failed to return home, his father filed a general diary with Sadar Dakshin Police Station later that night.
Police subsequently recovered the boy’s body from the jungle.
“The boy had severe injury marks on his head. We are investigating the incident,” OC Mohammad Rakibul Islam said.
