A schoolboy was killed after being hit by a pickup van in the capital’s Tejgaon area on Wednesday afternoon.
The victim identified as Nur Nabi, 14, a class 8 student at a local school.
The accident occurred around 4pm in Kalam Mia’s slum in Tejgaon Industrial Area.
Nur Nabi’s father, Rafiqul Islam, said the family lives in the slum and he works as a day labourer.
According to Nur Nabi’s father Rafiqul Islam, his son left home in the afternoon after telling his father he was going out to play. A few minutes later, locals informed him that a pickup van had struck the boy while he was crossing the road in front of the slum and fled the scene.
He rushed to the spot and took his son to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead at about 5:30pm.
Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the death, adding that the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
The family, originally from Bholahat upazila in Chapainawabganj district, now lives in the slum.
