Shakib Khan’s latest Eid release, ‘Prince: Once Upon a Time in Dhaka’, has recorded a modest opening at the box office despite strong pre-release buzz, also because of DCP-related issues with Star Cineplex.
Data from Bangla Movie Review, a popular Facebook page tracking Bangladeshi film reviews and box office updates, shows that Prince earned Tk 16.19 lakh on its opening day, rose slightly to Tk 20.06 lakh on the second day, and then fell to Tk 15.29 lakh on the third. Its total earnings over the first three days amounted to Tk 51.54 lakh.
However, these are the collections from nationwide theatres except for Star Cineplex, country’s largest multiplex chain. Industry chatter had initially pointed to issues with the film’s DCP (Digital Cinema Package) as the reason behind the disruption in showcasing the film at Star Cineplex.
However, the producers later clarified that while the file had been delivered, compatibility problems with the theatre’s system prevented it from being screened. With the glitch now addressed, the team has confirmed that the film started rolling out across all branches of the multiplex from Monday, alongside its ongoing nationwide release.
The hiccup drew disappointment from viewers who had planned to watch the film during the Eid holiday rush, with some taking to social media to voice frustration. The production team acknowledged that the setback not only disrupted audience plans but also affected box office momentum during a crucial festive window.
Directed by Abu Hayat Mahmud, the film explores the underworld of 1990s Dhaka, with Shakib Khan portraying a gangster on the run. The cast also includes Tasnia Farin and Jyotirmoyee Kundu.
While the film generated considerable audience interest ahead of its release, early responses suggest a mixed reception. Viewers and industry observers have pointed to issues with pacing, an uneven screenplay and technical inconsistencies, including visual effects and period inaccuracies.
Despite these criticisms, Shakib Khan’s screen presence has been widely noted as a key strength of the film. However, the supporting characters, including the two female leads, have drawn limited attention due to comparatively reduced narrative focus.
With competition intensifying during the Eid release window, the film’s performance in the coming days will be crucial in determining its overall box office trajectory.
