One person died of dengue fever while 546 new patients were hospitalised across the country in last 24 hours.
According to a press release from the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest fatality was a woman aged between 26 and 30 from the Barishal division.
During the same 24 hour period, 540 patients were discharged from hospitals following treatment. A breakdown of the latest hospitalisations shows that Dhaka Division (excluding city corporation areas) recorded the highest number of admissions with 109 patients.
This was followed by 97 in the Chattogram division, 96 in Barishal, 65 in Khulna, 58 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), 56 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), 32 in Rajshahi, 24 in Mymensingh, and 9 in the Rangpur division. No new cases were reported in the Sylhet division during this window.
From 1 January to 27 July, the total number of dengue cases in Bangladesh reached 13,644. Of these patients, 61.4 per cent (8,375) were male and 38.6 per cent (5,264) were female.
The total death toll for the year stands at 44, with a higher mortality rate among women, who account for 59.1 per cent (26 deaths) compared to 40.9 per cent (18 deaths) for men.
The DGHS data indicates a sharp rise in infections this month. Between 1 July and 27 July, 7,540 cases and 26 deaths were recorded, representing more than half of the total infections and fatalities for the entire year.
In contrast, the preceding months saw lower figures: June recorded 2,907 cases and 13 deaths; May had 714 cases and one death; April saw 640 cases with zero deaths; March had 353 cases with zero deaths; February recorded 409 cases and two deaths; and January saw 1,081 cases and two deaths.
Age-based statistics reveal that young adults between 26 and 30 years old are the most affected group. This demographic has seen the highest number of infections this year at 1,871, as well as the highest number of fatalities with nine deaths.
Currently, 1,123 dengue patients are undergoing treatment in various government and private hospitals across the country, while a total of 12,477 patients have been discharged so far this year.
