Taylor Swift premiered the music video for her latest single ‘Patient Zero’ at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, giving the song’s troubled relationship theme a darker, ghostly twist.

Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell star in the video as a couple whose relationship begins to fall apart. Swift plays Johnson’s former partner, appearing as a ghost who warns her about the man’s behaviour.

The video reveals that Swift’s character, an heiress, died in 2022 after a mysterious illness. A newspaper headline suggests her husband inherited billions following her death. Johnson later visits Swift’s grave and leaves black roses.

Swift directed the video and worked with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, known as “Chivo”. She said the project combines elements of gothic ghost stories, true crime and psychological thrillers.

At the VMAs, Swift also received the inaugural Artist Director Honor and later won Video of the Year for ‘The Fate of Ophelia’. She dedicated the award to Dolly Parton, whom she credited as a major inspiration.
