Measles deaths rise to 1,099 as three more die

The measles situation in Bangladesh remains a major concern as three more people died of suspected measles in the past 24 hours, taking the total suspected and confirmed deaths since 15 March to 1,099.

The latest figures were released in Monday’s report of the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), based on data collected from across the country between 8am on 27 September and 8am on 28 September.

The report said 1,214 new suspected measles cases and 96 confirmed cases were detected during the period. A total of 1,159 patients were admitted to hospitals, while 1,186 patients recovered and were discharged.

Since 15 March, the country has recorded 189,255 suspected measles cases and 21,308 confirmed cases. During the same period, 167,469 patients were hospitalised and 160,705 recovered after treatment.

Of the three deaths reported in the past 24 hours, two were from Chattogram division and one from Sylhet division.

According to the DGHS, 998 deaths have been reported among suspected measles cases since 15 March, while 101 deaths have been confirmed as being caused by measles.

Dhaka division reported the highest number of cases, with 80,144 suspected and 13,203 confirmed cases recorded since 15 March. The division reported 448 suspected deaths and 64 confirmed measles-related deaths.

Chattogram division recorded 37,747 suspected cases and 3,012 confirmed cases, with 83 suspected deaths and 10 confirmed deaths.
