Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Sakhawat Husain has urged people to seek medical advice promptly if they experience symptoms or warning signs of heart disease, warning that ignoring such signals can increase health risks.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion organised by the Bangladesh Cardiac Society at Hotel InterContinental Dhaka on Tuesday to mark World Heart Day 2026.

The minister said people are aware of the importance of preventing heart disease, but often fail to apply that awareness in their daily lives, which increases the risk of complications.

“We are all aware and understand the importance of awareness. But many times, we do not apply that awareness effectively in our real lives,” he said.
He described such negligence in the case of heart disease as “extremely risky”.

“We should not ignore any signal or warning from the heart and must seek medical advice quickly,” Sakhawat said.

The health minister said heart disease is responsible for the highest number of deaths among non-communicable diseases.

He stressed the need to strengthen public awareness to prevent and control heart disease, adding that awareness plays an important role in tackling both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
